Healthy Holiday Eating

by | Nov 21, 2018

The holiday season is here!  Endless amounts of food… plenty of unhealthy options… but no need to stress!!  It isn’t recommended to have the “oh it’s only once a year” mentality, however, if you approach the holidays with a PLAN, you can both enjoy them and stay healthy!

Don’t save all your calories for the big meal! If you don’t eat all day, cravings will take over, you will desire unhealthy foods more, and you will likely experience indigestion and bloating once you finally eat your big meal.  Solution? Eat a healthy breakfast, snacks, and lunch filled with quality carbs, lean protein, and healthy fats.  Ensure you are also drinking enough water too so you don’t mistake hunger for thirst.

Have trouble with overloading your plate and eating large portions?  Opt for a smaller plate – you will automatically serve yourself less by lack of space.  Start by loading your plate with veggies and salads. And lastly, remember, just a taste can satisfy a craving.  Studies show you truly enjoy only the first 1-2 bites of an item… so savor those “sample-sized” portions instead of forcing a huge slice of pie.  You’ll still be satisfied but won’t feel over-stuffed.

Finally, when you are entering the party, remember the 30-20-10 rule.  About 30 minutes BEFORE the meal, drink water to stay fully hydrated.  Take a full 20 minutes DURING the meal to eat and enjoy your food. Lastly, wait 10 minutes AFTER the meal to assess if you are still hungry before going up for seconds.

The holidays are here, so enjoy them, but make time to focus on healthy food choices, exercise, and de-stressing activities as much as you can.  Keep your conscience guilt-free and always remember what the holidays are truly about. Have a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season with your family and friends!
