Best Diet for the New Year

by | Jan 2, 2020

When people want “weight loss” or even just to become “healthier”, the majority of people look for some product, diet, shake, pill, etc. as their solution.  These quick fixes are NOT the answer.  There is no one food, plan, or supplement that is your secret weapon for good health.  If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Healthy eating isn’t rocket science.  You don’t have to follow a restrictive diet to get results.  And, you don’t have to waste your money on products.  It’s been proven time and again that following a balanced eating pattern versus a trendy diet is going to give you those long-term results you are striving for.

So what works?  The MEDITERRANEAN style of eating, based on the heart-healthy lifestyles of Greece and Italy to name a few, focuses on eating a variety of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean & plant-based proteins like beans, seafood, and healthy fats like avocados, olive oil, and nuts.  This diet pattern naturally gives you a balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fats.  When combined with daily activity & portion control, this diet plan can allow for weight loss too.

Another eating pattern that seems to work is the FLEXITARIAN diet.  This diet is very pro-plant but allows the flexibility to enjoy a steak dinner on date night or some turkey at Thanksgiving.  When individuals focus on filling their plates with more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and plant-based proteins like beans, tofu, lentils, and edamame, an appropriate balance of protein, carbs, and fats are found, and satiety is kept in check!
